Having a ZIP code is required for sending mail in the United States. It helps speed up mail delivery. It is also used as a place name. You can use this format for a certain address: "5-digit zip code: 12345" Or you can use the following format: "3-digit zip code:12345" It evolved out of a new wave of commerce after World War II. The new systems used trucks and airplanes to transport goods more quickly than the railroad based systems. The old systems were getting old and had to be replaced with a faster, more efficient system. Robert Moon developed the new system during his time working for the United States Postal Service. His new system relied on a numerical system, instead of a less structured recall of familiar cities. His new system was in place by 1963. It replaced the old system of personal mail management. The new system drew much controversy and incited a 20-year conflict. There are four main types of ZIP codes. The five digits start at zero in the Northeast and go up to nine in the west.
